Living Colour on “Vivid 25th anniversary tour” also in Prague

The well-known musicians Doug Wimbish, Vernon Reid, Will Calhoun and Corey Glover are coming with Living Colour on 18th of March to the Lucerna Music Bar. In the year 1988 came out their debut album “Vivid”, which is exactly 25 years ago. Living Colour is an iconic American hard-rock band, with influence also to funk and other music genres. The “Vivid 25th anniversary tour” is bringing the agency Liver Music to Prague, in context of their regular organized Prague International Bluenights. In the early 80s had Vernon Reid, a student of performing arts at Community College in Manhattan, the idea to found a band. The idea transformed into reality and the band DEFUNK, which played experimental and electronic jazz, was born. But Vernon wanted to try another music style, so he founded in 1984 the trio Living Colour. The other member were the guitarist Muzz Skillingsem, (and still are) drummer William Calhoun and singer Corey Glovera. They were all very experienced and studied musicians (City College and Berklee College Of Music). Corey had at this time a little movie role. They started with the usual martyrdom of playing in rock clubs. Till one day. They played in the New Yorker club CB GB, when the front man of the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger himself was captivated by the sound of the band. He made it for them possible to record some demo tapes, organized the contract with Epic Records and in the end he invited them for the recording of his solo album “Primitive Cool” in 1986.

In 1988 their debut album “Vivid” came out, which got directly to no.6 at the US charts and stayed there the whole year. The magazine Rolling Stone named Living Colour “Band of the year” and Vivid got platinum. Many interesting guest are on the album, one of them is of course Mick Jagger, who also produced the album. One of the famous songs from the album is “Cult Of Personality”, with the sampled statement of J.F. Kennedy. Also not missing is the funk (“Funny Vibe”) and a cover version of “Memories Can’t Wait” from TALKING HEADS. The album seems to be still up to date, it is mixing genres and it is politically attacking. In 1989 the song “Cult Of Personality” won a Grammy.

In 1990 the guitarist Muzz left the band, and Dough Wimbish took his place. At this time he had already a great history to show (Tackhead, James Brown, George Clinton, and Jeff Beck,…). In 1989 they did not win only the Grammy, but also the MTV Video Music Award in the category “Best new artist”. One year later they won the Grammy for the album “Time’s up”. In 1995 the band split up, but just 5 years later, the quartet Vernon Reid, Will Calhoun, Corey Glover and Doug Wimbish got together again. From this time on they fill the club and music halls around the world, in Prague on 18th of March in the LMB.
