About the event:

The institute Prague Music Performance (PMP) invites to Prague the founder, singer and guitarist of the legendary band Sonic Youth Thurston Moore. He is coming with his band, which is Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) and James Sedwards.

Thurston Moore has been at the forefront of the alternative rock scene since that particular sobriquet was first used to signify any music that challenged and defied the mainstream standard. He is the founder and ringleader of Sonic Youth, the band that turned on an entire generation to the value of experimentation in rock n’ roll – from it’s inspiration to a nascent Nirvana to the their own Daydream Nation recording being chosen by the USA Library of Congress for historical preservation in the National Recording Registry in 2006.

Thurston records and performs in a cavalcade of disciplines from free improvisation to acoustic composition to black/white metal/noise disruption. Along with his musical world he is involved with publishing and poetry, teaching writing annually at Naropa University, Boulder CO, a school founded by Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman in 1974.

The Best Day is the first solo record since Thurston’s Demolished Thoughts (2010) with both the dynamism of thrashing electric guitars and blissful 12-string acoustic ballads. Most of the tracks feature Thurston’s current London-centric line up of James Sedwards (guitars), Deb Googe (of My Bloody Valentine, bass) and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth, drums). A few tracks feature all instrumentation by TM and a few others were recorded in the USA during 2012-13 before TM’s relocation to London England.

It is a record defined by positivity and radical love. The songs range from the opener “Speak to the Wild”, an almost Crazy Horse influenced paean to anti-authority and activism, to the closing contemplation of new world discoveries as investigated on “Rosetta”, titled after the spaceship launched to scan the galaxies and which recently ‘pinged’ back affirmative light.

The Best Day is a new and exhilarating chapter for Thurston, and promises to be a creative highpoint for anyone interested in his legacy of avant-garde music and writing, as strong a statement as anything he has delivered post-Sonic Youth – serious and precocious and strangely accessible.
